Windows NT 4.0 RAS
[STEP I] :
Checking for Multiple Winsock.dll's
1.Click Start
2.Click Find
3.Select Files or Folders
4.Type: winsock.dll (in the Named Box)
5.Make sure Look In is set to c:\
6.Click Find Now
You should have ONE winsock.dll in the \windows\system32
directory (it may be in \winnt\system32). Chameleon's,
Trumpet's, Explore's, Compuserve's, Netcom's, etc. winsock.dll
should be renamed winsock.old. More than ONE winsock.dll
on your hard drive will lead to problems in resolving hostnames.
The Windows winsock.dll will equal 3K in size.
Make sure it is the correct
one!
[STEP
II] : Network
You may be prompted for the Windows NT CD/Disks after each
addition or when you close this control panel.
1.Click Start
2.Select Settings
3.Select Control Panel
4.Double-Click the Network Icon
There will be five tabs on this control panel.
Click on the Services Tab.
Check for Remote Access Service
If it is not installed:
1.Click on Add
2.Click on Remote Access Service
3.Click OK
Click on the Protocols Tab.
Check for the TCP/IP Protocol.
If it is not installed:
1.Click on Add
2.Click on TCP/IP
3.Click OK
Click on Close.
Windows NT may prompt you to restart the system.
After restart, proceed to next step.
[STEP
III] : Setting Up A Phone Book Entry.
1.Double-Click My Computer
2.Double-Click Dial-Up Networking
3.If this is the first entry you will be prompted to make an
entry.
4.If you already have a phone book entry, click the 'new' button.
There will be five tabs.
1.Basic Tab
1.Enter 'InterRamp' as the Entry Name.
2.The comment line is optional.
3.Enter in the InterRamp telephone number including the area code
that you will be dialing to.
4.Dial using -- choose your modem on this line.
2.Server Tab
1.Dial-up Server Type -- choose 'PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95
Plus, Internet'.
2.Be sure TCP/IP is checked.
3.Be sure that IPX/SPX compatible and NetBEUI are _NOT_ checked.
4.Check 'Enable software compression'.
5.Do NOT check 'Enable PPP LCP extensions'.
6.Click on 'TCP/IP settings...'.
1.Click on 'Server assigned
IP address'.
2.Click on 'Specify name server addresses'.
1.Enter 38.8.219.2 as the Primary DNS.
2.Enter 38.8.220.2 as the Secondary DNS.
3.Check 'Use IP header compression'.
4.Check 'Use default gateway on remote network'.
5.Click OK.
3.Scipt Tab
1.Click 'None'
4.Security Tab
1.Click 'Accept any authentication including clear text'.
5.X.25 Tab
1.Network should be set to '(none)'.
2.All other lines should be blank.
6.Click OK.
[STEP IV] :
Let's connect to the Internet!
1.Click on Dial
1.Username should be your InterRamp Account ID.
2.Password should be your password.
3.Leave the Domain line _BLANK_.
4.Click OK.
2.You should now be connected!
The dial-up networking monitor should now be on th taskbar. If
you do a right click in the icon you will see a list of options
including one to disconnect.
Troubleshooting WinNT Connection Problems
1.Symptom: While dialing you get the
error message:
"Verifying username and
password. Error 718: Timed out waiting for a valid response from
the remote PPP peer."
Solution:
1.Double click on dial-up
networking.
2.Click on 'more'.
3.Choose 'edit entry and modem properties'.
4.Click on the Server Tab
5.Uncheck 'Enable PPP LCP extensions'.
2.Symptom: While dialing you get the
error message:
"Verifying username and
password. Error 5 Access is denied."
Solution:
1.Double Click Dial-up networking.
2.Click on Dial
3.Be sure that the username is your account ID and NOT your
"computer name" and/or your "real name".
4.Be sure that you are typing in your password correctly.
Remember, it is case sensitive.
5.Be sure the Domain line is BLANK.
